Measuring the effectiveness of creators as an ecosystem

Stop measuring creators as if they were lone wolves and start thinking of them as a pack.

At dentsu, we see firsthand how algorithms have changed the way people discover, consume and engage with media. These metrics were built for an era where marketers were obsessed with distribution. Reach, engagement and clicks tell us what was seen, not what behavior was influenced, how perceptions shifted or how much creators contribute to building brands.

For me, the biggest challenge we face is that the wrong metrics reduce creators to content distribution channels, when their value lies in how they contribute to creating new spaces in culture, influencing decisions, and building desirability.

Creators operate as part of a wider ecosystem – they’re rarely responsible for a single moment of persuasion. When deployed across the consumer journey, their influence accumulates over time, becoming visible long before it becomes measurable. Yet brands continue to assess creators as though they should all deliver the same outcome.

Our work with Meta on The Creator Catalyst playbook shows the importance of casting, culture and commerce. Some creators drive awareness and cultural relevance while others translate complex brand messages into human stories and into commerce opportunities. When we use the same lens to measure creators, we overlook the specific role they play in driving growth.
