The Myth of the Future Skill

How to stop chasing future skills and start building an adaptive capability. 

Every year, organisations release new lists of ‘future skills’. And every year, those lists quietly expire. Coding becomes AI literacy. Design thinking becomes prompt engineering. Digital literacy absorbs both. 

The problem isn’t the speed of change. 

It’s how we’re responding to it. 

The flaw in future‑skills thinking 

Future‑skills frameworks are snapshots, not strategies. They reflect what matters right now: current technologies, market noise, and today’s hiring pressures. 

By the time learning programmes are designed, funded and deployed, the landscape has already shifted. The result is a perpetual cycle of catch‑up, reskilling for a future that’s already moved on. 

Adaptability doesn’t come from ticking boxes on a static skills matrix. It can’t be captured by lists that assume tomorrow will look like a slightly updated version of today. 

What endures through change? 

Across many major disruptions – from digital transformations to agile, data, and AI eras – the same pattern repeats. Those who thrive are often not just those with the most up-to-date technical skills, but those who can learn, unlearn and relearn quickly. 

They can: 

  • Make sense of ambiguity 
  • Collaborate under pressure 
  • Apply judgment when there’s no rulebook 

That’s not a coincidence. Its capability. 

Employees with strong critical thinking, collaboration, and adaptability are often better equipped to move across roles and acquire new technical skills more quickly, especially during periods of change. 

These aren’t ‘soft skills’ 

Quite the opposite. We describe these as Power Skills because they form the backbone that powers everything else.  

Critical thinking. Curiosity. Emotional intelligence. The ability to reflect, question, and continuously learn. They’re often deprioritised because they’re harder to see, harder to measure, and less tangible than technical training. But they’re precisely what keep technical skills relevant as tools, platforms and workflows evolve. 

What this means for L&D 

Future‑proofing learning doesn’t require better prediction; it requires stronger foundations. 

Instead of over‑investing in skills tied to uncertain futures, learning strategies should focus on building adaptive capacity through: 

  • Scenario‑based learning 
  • Real, messy casework 
  • Reflection that sharpens judgement, not just knowledge 

It also requires a shift in how success is measured. 

If we optimise only for speed‑to‑skill, we stay reactive. If we start measuring resilience to change, learning agility and decision quality, we build long‑term business impact. 

Yes, people should be trained on how to use AI tools to accelerate insight, QA campaigns, or optimise activations. These skills matter in the moment, but there’s a gap: without strong Power Skills, technical training can lose its value more quickly. 

Employees without the Power Skills can struggle when: 

  • The brief changes 
  • The tool behaves unexpectedly 
  • A client asks why a recommendation exists 
  • The next capability replaces the one they were trained on 

In contrast, employees with strong adaptive capability use the same tools differently. They challenge outputs, spot flaws, adapt workflows, and apply technology to new problems, all without constant retraining. 

The real myth 

The myth of ‘future skills’ is comforting. It suggests the future can be mapped, forecast and trained for in advance. But the future doesn’t reward prediction – it rewards adaptability. The organisations that win won’t be those chasing the next skills list. They’ll be the ones building people up to be ready for whatever comes next, even when it looks nothing like they expected.
